How it works
Fretboard King is an app for iPhone and Android that teaches you the notes on the guitar neck. It names a note and a string; you tap the fret on screen or play it on your guitar, and it tells you instantly whether you’re right.
Learn
Take the course: it shows you how the neck is laid out, starting with the notes on the low E and A strings. The Fretboard Explorer lets you look up any note, anywhere.
Drill
The app names a note and a string. Tap the fret, or play it on your guitar. Miss it and the right fret lights up, so every mistake teaches you something.
Track progress
See your accuracy on each string and your trickiest note, then run a focus session on the strings you miss most.
What’s in the app
Learn the Fretboard
A short course plus an explorer for the whole neck. Nothing locked, no ads.
Play It Live Beta
Play the note on your real guitar. The app hears which note you played and tells you if it’s right.
Progress
Accuracy by string, your trickiest note, and focus sessions that target your weak spots.
Tuner
A built-in tuner, so you can tune up before a Play It Live round without switching apps.
Questions about learning the fretboard
Do I need to read music?
No. Fretboard King only uses note names like C, F♯ and B♭. If you can tell your strings apart, you can start.
Does it work with my real guitar?
Yes. Turn on Play It Live and the app listens through your phone’s microphone: play the note it asks for and it tells you if you found it. When you don’t have a guitar with you, tap the fret on screen instead.
I’m a beginner. Is it too early to learn the notes?
If you know a few chords, it’s a good time. The course starts with the notes on your two lowest strings, the ones every chord shape and scale is built from, and adds the rest of the neck step by step.
How much time does it take?
A round of 12 notes takes about a minute and a half. Rounds of 6 and 24 notes are there too. A couple of rounds a day is enough to see your accuracy climb.
